18 Hole Championship Course
Stretching across gently rolling terrain on the edge of Virginia’s Piedmont region, the club’s 18-hole Championship Course meanders through woodlands and along quiet, reflecting waters. Independence underwent a full-scale renovation in 2014 and the result is a varied and inventive course appealing to golfers of many skill levels. The changes included regrassing the fairways and greens, ridding the layout of an overabundance of bunkers and strategically removing trees to get air moving, resulting in healthier turf. Five sets of tees range from just over 5,000 yards to more than 7,100 yards from the tips. From a playing perspective, varying shot values mean golfers have a more enjoyable experience and the test is a more palatable one than any time in the course’s history. The ground game is prevalent, especially in front of and around the putting surfaces where closely-mown areas mean players have a number of choices, including running the ball onto the green.

With its variety, Independence promises to excite and challenge all caliber of golfers.

Bon Secours Mentor Short Course
For junior golfers, families, and accomplished players who want to work on their short game, the nine-hole Mentor Course, designed by Tom Fazio, is ideal. The Mentor Course is adjacent to the Independence practice facility, which includes a double-ended tee complete with sand bunkers, pitching holes and expansive putting greens.

On the Bon Secours Mentor Course, the club has added larger eight-inch cups, in addition to the standard four-inch cups. These new holes offer a fresh take on the game adding an unique element of fun sure to impress those new to the game and those looking for something a little different.

The Bon Secours Mentor Course is also equipped with 21-inch cups for individuals interested in playing  FootGolf, a hybrid game of golf and soccer.

Practice Facilities
Independence offers two full-sized practice areas that allow you to hit off immaculate grass tees year-round. The practice tee nearest the clubhouse is comprised of a high quality range mat that extends the width of the practice tee. There is an expansive putting green and short game area adjacent to the area. The far end of the range is typically reserved as an all-grass tee. Independence also has three putting greens, as well as a short game practice complex complete with a bunker, large enough for five players to practice at the same time. The practice facilities allow you to polish all areas of your game.
